Definition of SEO

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization is the most basic method of attracting quality and increased numbers of web traffic to a site without having to pay for it. This is unlike Search Engine Marketing (SEM) where one has to pay for inclusion and placement. With SEO, the search engines naturally, through algorithmic methods places sites that have a specific keyword or key phrases on the higher or earlier results. This means that SEO-rich content is more likely to receive more hits by visitors than general articles.

SEO is able to target different types of searches. This includes word search, local search, image search, industry specific search and video search. As such, search engine optimization has over the years become an ideal tool of ensuring that websites gain presence in the World Wide Web.
Two of the main considerations that SEO put in place in order to be a successful marketing strategy on the internet include considering the workings of search engines, and information most searched by people on the internet. As such, optimizing the website involves revising the content, associated coding and HTML for purposes of increasing the relevance of the website to keywords. More to this, SEO is done for purposes of removing barriers that may hinder indexing activities performed by search engines.

Search Engine Optimizers also use the SEO acronym. These are emerging consultants specializing in optimizing web content for other people. In-house optimizing companies are also on the increase mainly offering optimization services to clients. With the expansion of such services, stand-alone service optimization providers are also emerging in the market. At time, effective optimization may need the HTML source codes to be altered. This calls for the incorporation of SEO tactics into web-development and web-design. Optimized web designs, content managing systems, menus, images, shopping carts, videos among other web elements are collectively referred as “search engine friendly”. The sole aim of optimizing such is to increase the exposure of the website to the search engines. Spam-dexing or Black Hat-SEO are a different category of techniques, which use methods such as keyword stuffing, article spinning and link farms to degrade relevant search results and the experience of people using search engines. This form of optimization is looked down upon in the industry and search engines specifically remove sites that use such techniques from their directories.
